Carbon Neutral Baking

At Betty Miller we are as passionate about caring for the natural environment as we are about making natural products. We believe it makes sense to protect the planet around us which provides us with the wholesome ingredients we rely on. This ethos has led to us to creating the world's first carbon neutral bakery.

The baking process generates a fairly large carbon footprint. Using fossil fuels such as gas to heat ovens adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. In addition electricity is produced primarily from power stations that burn fossil fuels and running dough mixers, packing machines and lights for example uses a lot.

We have committed to running our bakery on renewable energy only. Firstly and most importantly our ovens are heated using biomass wood pellets. With fossil fuels the carbon within them has been trapped there for millions of years and when released is finally set free into the atmosphere. With biomass, the carbon released by burning the wood pellets is absorbed by the new trees being grown for us to use in the future. This gives our process a very short carbon cycle, and ensures all the carbon we are releasing is being trapped again rather quickly.

You may ask how it is possible to control our electricity supply, and the answer is rather simple. We buy all our power from renewable sources only such as wind, wave and solar. So when you pass through Northamptonshire along the M1 and see plenty of wind turbines near junction 16 for Daventry, you can think of us! Buying electricity in this way is obviously more expensive than average and this makes us careful to be as energy efficient as possible. So for example our bakery uses high bay LED lighting which is over 40% more power efficient than traditional bulbs.

Of course your dog will be happy with our biscuits regardless of our renewable energy policy, but we hope you will rest assured that this is just one of the ways we work tirelessly to bring you the best quality products around.
